It’s been nine months since I’ve written to you last—not because I had nothing to say, but maybe because I had too much to say. I’ve also been busy—in the past year, my husband and I have married off three of our daughters--yes, THREE. We had one lovely wedding here in our Kewaunee backyard. The guests stayed in 20 plus Airbnbs as well as at local hotels. They ate at local restaurants and drank at local bars. Though they came from all over the country, everyone observed how lovely and hospitable Kewaunee is. Our small corner of the world can stack up against any other in terms of beauty and charm.
I also have grandchildren on the way! It’s been a very busy year and is likely to be even busier still in the coming years. But my growing family is not all that keeps me occupied. After I stepped down from my City Council position, I was elected to be a County Supervisor. So if I was your city alderman before, I am now a county supervisor for you and several hundred other Kewaunee County residents. My district (#19) is roughly the southern third of the city. It contains schools, the county building, the new jail site, a good part of the lakefront, several parks, Section 8 housing, single family homes, low cost housing and farms. So I am personally involved in many aspects of the county government.
Unlike my initial experience with the city, I was added to many important county committees straight away. I am a social worker by trade and education, receiving a Master’s in Social Work, known as an MSW. I worked in schools, hospitals, group homes, residential treatment, shelters and other social service institutions before I began raising my family. I am excited to be a member of the Public Safety & Justice committee and Human Services committee. I have also recently been appointed to the Violence Intervention Project (VIP). I hope to call on my experience and education to provide meaningful oversight and knowledge to these committees.
Additionally, I have been added to the UW Agriculture & Extension committee. This organization interfaces with the University of Wisconsin System of colleges and works tirelessly to educate county residents in areas of agriculture, dairy, human development, community development, and healthy food habits—a list that is by no means exhaustive.
I am also on the Broadband Sub-Committee, whose goal is to ensure that acceptable broadband is available to every household and business in Kewaunee County. I am doing my homework and now have a better understanding of 5G, Starlink, DSL, fiber, cell towers and cable. It’s been a fascinating learning curve. And I will continue to read everything that comes my way so that I can be a valuable asset to each of my committees.
Since my election in April, I have been throwing my energy and time into the county committees I have been assigned. I am excited about all the new challenges and I plan to be as transparent as I have always been. I am very happy to say that I have yet to find issues that are unavailable to the public in one form or another. I will explain issues as I see them, and I will explain my votes. If you see me around town, I am also happy to answer any questions about the county, or point you to someone who can.
Thanks for listening,
Wendy
